Asus ROG Xbox Ally X Hands-On: Xbox Vibes in a High-Octane Handheld

Mygeekscore: Asus ROG Xbox Ally X is not any other Windows-based consoling portable, it is a perfect blend of the Microsoft ecology and the genius behind the ROG, which is offering a console-like experience in a small frame. At a higher selling price of 999 dollars, this updated version of the ROG Ally X replaces the familiar ROG branding with xbox-influenced ergonomics, and feels like a smaller Xbox controller that is about to leave a dent in your backlog wherever you go.

Its strong AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, high battery life, and smooth interface that makes Windows 11 quirks manageable make it a must-have among gamers who do not need a laptop that is as versatile as this one. And yet in this high cost does it really take handheld gaming to the next level or is it tripping on software growing pains? Let’s break it down.

Design and Ergonomics: Marathon Sessions.

On the surface, it looks like a collaboration between ROG and the Xbox: the grips and impulse triggers are shaped like the Xbox controllers, and the only difference that can be noticed is minor ROG elements such as the logotype and the Xbox ROG etching. It is light, only 1.5 pounds, which is surprisingly light especially when you consider that 1.9 by 11.4 by 4.7 inches is a very small size.

Although it weighs more than the chunky Lenovo Legion Go 2 (that weighs more than 1.9 pounds), this device fits in your hands like a natural extension, making it much easier to use after hours of the button-mashing in shooters such as Gears of War: Reloaded. The construction is strong and unified, much better than the uncomfortable accessories of remote-play gadgets, such as the PlayStation Portal.

Its 7-inch IPS touchscreen displays with 1080p and 120Hz buttery refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium tear-free action, and its brightness of 500 nits is bright enough to see in daytime outdoor skirmishes but is nowhere near the inky black of the OLED in darker games like Resident Evil 4. Its screen size is smaller than the huge 8.8-inch screen of the Legion Go 2 but that sacrifice increases portability.

here is a good connectivity with two USB-C (one USB4/ Thunderbolt-ready, so that it may be docked and charged) and Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 and a microSD card slot that is easily swapped. Generally, it is the most comfortable handheld we have held and is accurate in control better than the Steam Deck OLED, which has a 1.4-pound frame.

Performance: Brutal Strength and Intelligence.

The AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme (based on Zen 5 architecture, 16 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores, 50 TOPS NPU to support AI-assisted features) with 24GB of DDR5 RAM and 1TB of M.2SSD is the beast under the hood in on-the-go gaming. At benchmarks with 1080p plug-in mode, performance, it matches with its competitors such as the Legion Go 2.

As an example, in Cyberpunk 2077, on Ultra settings, it achieves frame rates close to the Legion Go 2 and matches the Steam Deck OLED in ray-traced situations. It dominates the Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and the Guardians of the Galaxy gives it a decisive victory over the more expensive Legion Go 2 (Z1 Extreme on SteamOS).

This is supported by synthetic tests: It is on a par with the Legion Go 2 in Geekbench 6.3 Pro and Cinebench 2024, and 3DMark Solar Bay suite puts it even with the MSI Claw 8 AI+.

The magic here is in the new Xbox full-screen mode, which particularly deprives windows bloat of faster loads and higher FPS – – think up to 10x faster shader compilation in optimized titles, battery savings, and no stutter. In-game performances in Forza Horizon 5 are silky smooth at 60+ FPS on high settings, and indies such as Hades II have a sense of responsiveness. It is not undefeated, Windows overhead remains behind pure SteamOS installations, but in the case of hybrid library that includes the Xbox Game Pass, Steam and Epic, it is amazingly smooth.

Battery and Efficiency: Power That Lasts.

The largest improvements of the ROG Xbox Ally X include a 80Whr battery, upgraded to 60Whr battery of the standard ROG Ally X. It lasted a staggering 13 hours and 42 minutes in our video playback test (720p loop, silent) to outperform the Legion Go 2, which lasted 11 hours and the Steam Deck OLED, which lasts even less. Gaming consumes it more, of course: the performance mode of Cyberpunk 2077 lasted almost 3 hours in medium settings, which was almost 45 minutes faster than the Legion Go 2.

That could be as long as an afternoon commute in lighter fare such as in Coral Island. Efficiency optimizations, such as the Gaming Copilot real-time tips developed by NPU, are beneficial in the way of getting extra out of a single charge without compromising appearance.

Software: Console Glow-Up Windows.

Windows 11 in handhelds has been a very bulky process, and now the Xbox overlay alters the situation. It is a full-screen dashboard that consolidates your collections of libraries-Xbox, Steam, Epic and GoG into a control-friendly dashboard, and it is time to put the mouse-hunt behind you forever.

The Xbox button will load quick-access apps to clips, parties, and Remote Play, and compatibility labels (Handheld Optimized) will direct you to silky performers. The Armoury is overlayed with per-game adjustments, and AI-assisted onboarding features such as performance estimations (Should play great at 60 FPS) make it very easy.

With that said, our pre-launch team ran into roadblocks: Steam games would sometimes crash into desktop mode, and mode changes required restarting. Such promised features as Auto SR upscaling, or AI highlight generation will not be released until 2026, and the overlay will only be rolled out to other devices by that time as well. These should be ironed out with post-launch patches, but in the meantime, it is an encouraging move towards console simplicity on PC larger grounds, more user-friendly than the ROG Ally X system, but still not as well-polished as SteamOS.
