Apple M1 chip outperforms Intel Core i7-11700K in PassMark (single-thread)

In PassMark testing, the 8-core Apple M1 processor was faster than the new 8-core Intel Core i7-11700K. Before introducing the M1 chip into this synthetic benchmark database, Cypress Cove’s Core i9-11900K and Core i7-11700K models maintained a single-core performance lead. This surpassed the AMD model Ryzen 5000 with Zen 3 architecture.

The Apple M1 processor is manufactured using TSMC’s 5nm process technology. This is Apple’s first computer-only processor. It combines four high-performance Firestorm cores with four energy-efficient Icestorm cores. The Apple M1 chip is based on the ARM architecture.

In the single-core PassMark test, the Apple M1 processor scored 3,550 points. The Core i7-11700K scored 3,542 points in the same test. The performance difference between processors is only 0.2%, which may be due to a bug. Rocket Lake-S personnel can also improve performance after the final BIOS version is released to support new processors for Intel 400 and 500 series motherboards. But leadership remains Apple’s decision, which is very ironic in the context of recent events.

The Apple M1 processor is one of the most productive chips for single-threaded tasks, but multithreaded is far behind its competitors in the desktop segment. Still, Apple chips do not support multithreading (virtual cores). Perhaps Apple will be able to fix this fact with future high-performance Apple M1X processors.
