U.S.-India Trade Deal Nears Completion, Says U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor

U.S.-India Trade Deal

The long-awaited U.S.-India trade agreement is in its final stage, with only about one percent of the negotiations still pending, U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Tuesday (June 30, 2026). After nearly 18 months of discussions, he expressed confidence that both countries are close to reaching a final agreement.

Speaking at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum Leadership Summit in Washington, Gor said that the majority of the deal has already been completed, with only a few outstanding issues left for both sides to resolve.

“We are in the final steps on this deal. Most of this deal is complete. There’s a few items that remain on both sides. It’s in the last 1% of that deal,” he said.

Addressing questions about the lengthy negotiation process, Gor pointed out that while talks have continued for around a year and a half, the United States and India have maintained a strong trading relationship for more than two decades. He added that he remains committed to finalizing the agreement, believing it will benefit both nations.

The Ambassador also highlighted the strong personal relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying it has played an important role in strengthening ties between the two countries.

Gor noted that President Trump continues to remember his previous visit to India with great appreciation and often speaks positively about the experience.

“His visit last time, it was one of his most remarkable visits that he continues to talk about. He holds it in a very fond place. It’s an incredible thing. So I look forward to having the President visit us back in India,” Gor said.

In addition, the Ambassador announced that the Quad Foreign Ministers are expected to meet in the Philippines in approximately two weeks, marking another important step in regional cooperation.

The U.S.-India trade deal, once finalized, is expected to further strengthen economic relations and deepen the strategic partnership between the world’s two largest democracies.
